Thinking about trading in the beach for the mountains? While the vibrant energy of sunny California brings out folks from all over the globe, there is something special about the crisp mountain air and diverse terrain Utah offers. Whether you might be looking for a change in scenery, a cheaper cost of living, or a be a part of a growing community, there’s lots to write home about Utah. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you consider moving from California to Utah.

Climate

Get ready to buy a winter coat.

Probably one of the biggest differences between California and Utah is the climate. While both states are large and offer a variety of climates and terrains, you’ll find that Utah ranges from hot, dry deserts to flourishing foliage covered mountains. The summers are hot and dry, while depending on where you are in the state, the winters are cold and snowy. This is the place if you want to experience all four seasons, providing a change in scenery and variety in your life.

You might want to think about your vehicle (four wheel drive is highly recommended) and keep in mind your utility bills in the summers/winters.

The People

Get ready for a different political (and religious) climate.

On the contrary of California, the state of Utah is moderately conservative. As you see in most states, urban areas tend to lean more liberal, while rural areas lean conservative. Since the state is mostly rural, it follows the pattern of a more conservative state. Over half of the Utah population is affiliated with the Mormon church, and generally there tends to be a correlation between Christians and politically right-leaning. Additionally, most of the representation in the current state and federal governments are conservative.

Of course, as mentioned, the larger cities have a high liberal population, so you will be able to see both sides of the political spectrum throughout the state.

The Cost

Get ready to spend less.

Cost of living in Utah is 31.6% cheaper than California, so expect to save a few dollars. Even though the price of housing has risen in the last few years, it’s still exponentially cheaper than The Golden State. Even though the average income is lower in Utah, it is still proportionally cheaper to live in Utah. This means more fun money to play in the mountains or explore the city!

Of course, this barely scratches the surface of all the things to consider when moving to Utah, but it’ll get you started. As more and more businesses and employment openings increase, this state is growing in opportunities.
