How To Prepare For Movers

So you did it – you hired a moving company. You can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that you’ll have a team of experts on your side to help tackle this daunting event. But even though you’ve passed the baton, you still can’t help but wonder – should I be preparing things that would help out my movers?

Well, on behalf of all movers, thanks for thinking of us. And while we want you to sit back and let us do the heavy lifting (literally), there are a few things that can help us all make your move as smooth as possible.

1. Be fully packed.

If you’ve hired movers to only pick up and transport your items (and you did not hire their packing services), make sure you are fully packed and ready by the time the movers arrive. Label boxes with content and the room they belong in, and any necessary handling directions so your movers know which boxes need to be handled with extra care.

If you are not fully packed, you risk being charged for additional services if they need to help finish packing for you, or for the extra time it will take for them to wait for you to finish packing.

If you have hired a full-service move and they will come in and do the packing for them, you can pack up the small things like office supplies, décor, or other odds and ends scattered around your house. You can also group like-items together and empty drawers/cabinets. This will help save time and also help when you’re unpacking when all your items are together in an organized manner.

2. Organize your belongings.

Do you have any items that will not be going with you? Maybe you’re planning on donating them later. Or maybe you have things you plan to take to your new location on your own (personal items, such as personal documents or paperwork you’d prefer to keep on you). Whatever the category may be, separate them into different areas and be sure to communicate to your movers what needs to be left alone or loaded into a different vehicle.

3. Consider the small logistics.

Do you need to secure a parking space for the truck to load or unload? If you live in or are moving to an apartment, can you contact your building to see if you can reserve an elevator? Are there things that might slow down or hinder the movers, such as stairs to the building, narrow walkways or parking rules? Those are things you will want to communicate to your moving company so they can plan ahead. This info will help them know if they need to bring any extra equipment, additional workers, or plan how much time it will take.

4. Protect your home.

Come moving day, you’ll have a multitude of traffic going in and out. You can minimize any wear and tear by placing tarps, carpets, old sheets/blankets, or cardboard pieces on the floor. This will be especially helpful if it’s raining or snowing. Cover the stairs with protective, anti-slip materials. Consider placing foam around door frames or corners to prevent denting or chipping the edges.

5. Make a plan for your kids and pets.

Moving day can be chaotic, especially for small kids or pets. It can even lead to dangerous situations, if a child or animal gets in the way of moving a large piece of furniture. They might even wander off, since it’s hard to juggle all the commotion and keep a good eye on them at the same time. It’s best to try to make accommodations for them to be looked after by a trusted friend or relative, somewhere safe and out of the way.

6. Make accommodations for the movers.

While you definitely don’t need to throw them a parade, it’s nice to be welcoming and considerate to the workers helping you with your move. Make sure the bathroom is equipped with toilet paper, soap and disposable towels. If you have a large move and you feel inclined to do so, you can provide drinks and snacks to keep their energy up throughout the day. And if you feel they did an exceptional job, have some cash on hand to tip them for a job well done – tipping is always appreciated (but not required).
